Horror Escape Games Are Becoming Its Own Genre: Come And Join The Adventure
Scary escape games are a niche genre that doesn’t get as much recognitions as role play games, shooters, puzzles, etc. Yet, when we’re in for a good spook, nothing will captivate us more than a good horror game where you have to apply your wits to get away from danger.
Horror Escape Games In A Nutshell
There are plenty of interactive horror stories out there, but not all of them can be considered escape games. As we’re concerned, even a classic point and click can become an escape story at some point, If it features at least several of these elements:
- Locked / closed space. “It doesn’t have to be a snowman”: it’s perfectly fine if you’re on open air, but still can’t get back to civilization. The area is limited, and the player has to get out. Details may vary.
- That’s the primal motivation in scary escape games. Some maniac is out in the woods searching for you, or you’re locked in a mansion with a bunch of ghosts, or you’re in the laboratory and something went terribly wrong. Threat is not always the main plot, but when it is, the story feels much more focused.
- Time limit. While lots of flash games or more casual horrors don’t have this on all the time, even the most relaxed point and click adventures may have certain sequences where you have to be fast, or it is game over. Some people find time limits frustrating, but they sure bring tension in scenes where authors want to create the feeling of real danger.
- Creepy music and sound effects. It doesn’t feel threatening to creep alone in the dark, if the background music is off. All those noises, sudden squeaks and weird synth sequences add a lot to the player’s experience, and if they do not fit, the mood shifts drastically.
The puzzles are also important, but many creators try to make them easier. Of course, it shuffles the sense of adventure a lot, but it makes the games playable for beginners. However, if you’re up for a challenge, we present you a free game that’s a good place to start.
Morbid: Horror Escape Game Online
People are dying all over the place, and it’s up to you to find out why. The first guess might be the plague, but after observing the scene for quite a bit you begin to understand that it’s actually something else… and it’s coming to get you.
The game was created back in 2009, but it doesn’t feel that way. Hand-drawn graphics, messy but beautiful art and conveniently laconic storytelling are features we love in point and click games even today.
The full version of the game is available for free, so it’s a nice way to get into genre and find out whether it suits you. After you finish the adventure, make sure to try other of the many horror escape games out there!
